I’ve been running a lot lately.

But I wouldn’t consider myself a “runner.”

What I like about running is that the progress feels incremental. I’m not necessarily posting better times every time I get out there.

Some days I’m faster. Some days I’m slower.

However, over several months, I’ve noticed my threshold stretching. The little voice in my head screaming, the ache in my lungs and my legs fading. Where I used to check my watch at .8 miles, I now check it after two miles. Or three.

That’s real momentum. Each run building on the last, even if it doesn’t feel like improvement in the moment.

Writing works the same way. Not every draft is faster, sharper, or cleaner. The more you show up, the longer you can go before you feel stuck, and the stronger your work becomes over time.
